For many years the International Warehouse Logistics Association has held an annual IT conference. This year the conference is being held in Chicago over Nov. 6-8. Details of the conference can be found here.

At $299 (IWLA Members) per attendee this educational event provides a fantastic ROI. Non-members are also welcome and I recommend the conference to you for your IT and operations staff.This event is for everyone in the warehouse who touches technology or oversees any aspect of operations. Of course, C-level executives who direct operations and technology employees will also reap benefits by attending. Be sure you’re there to network with these warehouse-based 3PL leaders and to learn more about the future of your trade association.

The IWLA Annual Convention and Expo will be held in Orlando from March 10th through 12th.

For those who are members of this association, you already realize the value proposition membership delivers. If you are not a member, I would recommend you visit and consider the benefits of membership. I would like you all to consider attending this high value event.

Argos has been an associate member of this body for 2 decades. Some 6 years ago we seriously considered dropping our membership because we questioned the value proposition for us. On reflection I decided the problem was not with the association, but with us. We joined the association, exhibited at the annual convention and expected benefits to flow from that. No really significant benefits followed and so we questioned our membership.

At that time I decided we needed to be more proactive in our approach. I joined a number of committees, looked at the services offered (usually at no charge to members) and began to leverage our membership. The value proposition changed significantly and today I am a champion of this association and a nominee for a seat on the board from March 12th.

The key factor in this change has been recognizing the value of involvement. This is equally true for the warehouse members as it is for us as associate members. Networking with your peers, examining and benchmarking best practices, taking opportunities in the areas of education and legal positioning in staffing and contracts, having your voice heard in political forums are all available to you.  Finding skilled employees in the career center, highlighting your existence and capabilities in the Logistics Services Locator for prospective customers and extending your reach through collaborative efforts with other members are just some of the benefits the active members are enjoying.

I look forward to seeing you in Orlando next month.

A look back at 2012 by logistics professionals

As this year is coming to an end, how have your operations emerged from the Great Recession? The 2012 Logistics Management survey has revealed major trends and offers a first-hand look into the state of today’s DC and warehouse operations: 
  • 52 percent of respondents are adopting a more cautious approach, spending less than $250,000 for warehousing equipment and technology in 2012.
  • 17 percent of respondents are spending $1 million or more in 2012, and another 16 percent are planning to spend that same amount in 2013.
  • About 60 percent of respondents are planning to expand.
  • 26 percent are increasing their number of SKUs.
  • 25 percent are increasing the number of employees.
  • To reduce operating costs, 64 percent of respondents are “improving warehouse processes” and 61 percent are “improving inventory control”.
